Writing the way you talk makes you a better writer
First mentioned/ideated by: Many
It's easy to get caught up in the idea that we need to write in a certain way, using big words and complex sentence structures.
But the truth is, we should write the way we talk. After all, that's how we communicate with others in everyday conversation.
To do so,
i. Use contractions
ii. Use idioms
iii. Use the words that come naturally to you
iv. Vary your sentence length
etc
Writing that mirrors the way you talk is perfect for most ocassions including stories, screenplay, presentations, business letters, advertisement, website copy, letters to friends, blog posts, and even grocery lists.
Why?
One, it's more relaxed & natural, & will make your writing more effective in achieving your goals.
Two, your readers will appreciate your authentic voice, & they’ll be more likely to connect with your writing.
Plus, when you write the way you talk, you’ll make lesser mistakes.
Not only that, when we write this way, our thoughts are more organized, and it's easier to stay focused and on track.
All of the above will make your writing more engaging and will help you sound more like a real person rather than a stuffy professor.
The best way to learn this style is by example. Read some of your favorite authors and try to mimic their writing voice. Or, better yet, pick up a pen and paper and start writing something down just the way you would speak it.
